It’s not just ‘mad March’ – Adelaide’s creative culture is thriving year-round.
With a flourishing arts community drawn to the state for its affordability, liveability, and innovation, it’s no surprise that a hub connecting and representing South Aussie artists, craftspeople and designers has taken off.
Well Made is an online platform marketing the work of SA creatives, providing access to the creative community and a one-stop resource of creative spaces.
“Supporting local artists and talent is fundamental to ensuring the state’s arts and cultural sector survives and thrives,” saysPeta Mount, Well Made Coordinator.
“Our festivals and arts events are world renowned and make a significant economic, cultural, and social impact on our state. Investing in finely crafted high quality locally produced work also brings vibrancy and character to both our public and private spaces.”
For local furniture designer-maker Lex Stobie, Well Made provides an invaluable chance to connect with the creative community, and he advocates local creatives to get involved.
“I believe Well Made is a must for all creative practitioners. The bigger the community on board, the greater the resources available to the members, and the best result for the end user,” Lex says.
Designing and producing contemporary, bespoke furniture from natural materials of ecological origins, Lex’s diverse CV includes a series of pieces for Adelaide’s renowned Orana restaurant, a refurbishment for a foyer of the Opera House, and timber casework for an organ in Adelaide’s Saint Xavier Cathedral.
Lex has lived and worked in big cities, but says that South Australia offers something inimitable.
“I can have my cake and eat it too!” he says. “In South Australia, I can be a part of something bigger without the extreme costs of living an extensive travel time, accessing food, culture and lifestyle with ease.”
“Adelaideans are genuinely unique! We have a strong creative identity that represents many communities, and an amazing abundance of natural resources and a real clean living approach, that we are able to sustain a better-balanced lifestyle.”
