Imagine jet-setting anywhere on Earth in less than an hour.

Well, according to billionaire founder and CEO of SpaceX Elon Musk, it’s possible.

Creating a buzz in Adelaide for the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), Elon outlined not only his mission to colonise Mars in the next decade, but to use space technology to transport passengers anywhere in the world in under 60 minutes.

In. A. Rocket. *mind blown*.

That means a sneaky trip to New York in half-an-hour is possible and Elon says the cost per seat should be about the same as an economy ticket on an aircraft.

The Adelaide Convention Centre was packed for his talk, which was live streamed around the world.

SpaceX plans to put a colony of a million people on Mars by 2028. Elon talked about their plans to build a rocket bigger than an A380 plane to send around 100 people to the Red Planet at a time, with 1-2 people per cabin – a trip taking around 3-6 months.

The presentation also included plans for a base on the Moon.

The hour-long address was buzzing across social media – but in case you missed it, we compiled the top 5 quotes from Mr Musk himself:

1. “The future is vastly more exciting if we’re multi-planet species,” said Musk in his opening. “It’s about believing in the future… I can’t think of anything more exciting than being out there among the stars.”

2. “It’s 2017; we should have a lunar base by now.”

3. Musk says SpaceX will launch cargo missions by 2022. “That’s not a typo. It is aspirational… We can be ready for a launch in about five years. Five years seems like a long time to me.”

4. “On Mars, the sky is blue at dawn and dusk and red during the day, it’s the opposite of Earth.”

5. “There is something else. If you build a ship that’s capable of going to Mars, what if you take that same ship and go from one place to another on Earth?  So we looked at that and the results are quite interesting…  travelling 27,000 kilometres an hour; most of what people consider to be long distance trips, would be completed in less than half an hour.”

Following the talk, Musk shared the earth to earth potential of SpaceX’s rocket technology, as well as conceptual images of a Mars city and lunar base on Twitter:
