From hip hangouts to off-the-eaten-track, South Australia serves up a range of dining experiences – and three have just been awarded gongs in the first national Good Food Guide Awards.

It’s the first year that the iconic Good Food Guide awards has included the whole of Australia, and South Aussies made a good show at the awards – held last night in Sydney – with local restaurants and hospitality personalities sweeping up commendations.

Nikki Friedli, Africola
Winner, Top Service Award

To go to Africola is to love Africola… and not just for the bold South African flavours. 26-year-old restaurant manager Nikki Friedli is renowned for reading an audience – as the Good Food Guide editors put it: “Whether it’s with a pour of something fresh and new from the local-leaning wine list or a whip-fast one-liner, Friedli makes sure every customer leaves Africola with the world’s biggest smile.”

The East Terrace establishment nabbed the gong for top service, awarded for the highest standard of restaurant service, judged on attitude, skill, knowledge and personality. Stop by and find out why (as well as try the cauliflower steak).

Winner, Food for Good Award

After recently being named Australia’s best restaurant, Jock Zonfrillo’s Orana adds to its accolades with the ‘Food for Good’ award, presented to its Orana Foundation. The award celebrates the restaurant’s innovation, charity and sustainability, and for going above and beyond to contribute to the broader community.

Known for his innovative use of native ingredients at Orana, Jock expanded his discoveries into the foundation – set up to preserve the food heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as integrate native foods into wider culinary culture. Most importantly, Jock works to ensure any benefits of the native produce industry are returned to Indigenous communities. The Orana Foundation has also partnered with the University of Adelaide to create an online database of native foods, with culinary uses and nutritional information, a resource that generations of Australians will be able to learn (and cook) from.

The Summertown Aristologist 
Winner, Regional Wine List of the Year

“Disguised as a casual bar and restaurant, this Narnia wardrobe to SA’s Basket Range hides a magical cellar in its bottom drawer,’ said Good Food Guide’s editors of Adelaide Hills venue The Summertown Aristologist.

Opened in 2016 by winemakers Jasper Button and Anton van Klopper, along with restaurant manager Aaron Fenwick, the Summertown establishment won Regional Wine List of the Year, awarded for complementing the restaurant’s food and style, while also reflecting the unique qualities of the Hills region.

The editors said that the wine list offers something for everyone: “Wine tourists can sink Adelaide Hills drops the world is jonesing for, while locals imbibe the top of the minimal-intervention pops from France and Italy.”
