Across the country this August, pubs, restaurants, cafés and more are rallying together to help our drought-affected farmers.

Since the start of the year, dry conditions have spread and worsened across Australia, with the Bureau of Meteorology declaring this Autumn the second driest on record.

Alongside New South Wales and north-west Victoria, eastern South Australia has also been among the worst affected areas.

The drought has hit hard farmers and their families who are struggling to put food on the table.

So counter-meal classic, the schnitzel parmigiana a.k.a ‘parmi’ or ‘parma’, has become the unlikely hero with calls to “smash a parma for a farmer” echoing. But it’s not just hotels that are heeding the call for help!

Prancing Pony Brewery in the Adelaide Hills will donate 70 kegs to venues, with proceeds from beer sales supporting the drought cause stating “No grain, no food, no beer”.

Adelaide’s Antica Pizzeria e Cucina is donating $5 from every pizza to drought-affected communities.

On Friday August 10 DIY megastore Bunnings will host a Drought Relief Fundraising Sausage Sizzle from 9am–4pm at all its SA stores.

Bunnings team members will get behind the barbecue with all funds raised going to Rural Aid’s Buy a Bale campaign, to provide livestock feed and household essentials to drought affected families in impacted areas.

A handful of local pubs are donating $5 for every ‘parmi’ sold to farmers in need until August 19.

Christine McAuliffe from Adelaide favourite The Highway Hotel in Plympton says, “we always use local produce so the drought affects our suppliers, and as a family owned and operated business ourselves we can’t stand to see families struggling, which is why we’ve got behind the cause”.

Sharon Kinnear, who owns The Criterion Tavern in Gawler with her husband John says, The drought affects every SA consumer when our farmers are in need, so we all need to do our bit”.

“We were only going to run it for a fortnight but it’s gone gang-busters”.

Sharon says not only are ‘parmis’ flying out of the kitchen, but also donation tins are also overflowing thanks to those wanting to do more.
