‘No mess’ food packaging springs into State

Adelaide family-owned food producer, Spring Gully Foods, has produced an innovative lift-and-drain feature to a new line of products which launches today (Wednesday, August 31).

Spring Gully Foods‘ lift-and-drain plastic packaging allows product to sit in a basket within a container which can then be easily lifted from the liquid with no mess.

The innovation is apparently a first for Australia in this category.

The new product line includes Spring Gully dill cucumbers and a range of wholly Australian grown and processed pickled onions, olives and capsicums, which are now being sold Australia-wide exclusively through Coles

Spring Gully’s managing director, Kevin Webb, who recently joined as new I Choose SA campaign ambassador which encourages people to support and buy local, says the new lift-and-drain packaging went through significant re-engineering within the Spring Gully factory at Dry Creek.

Speaking at the official Spring Gully Foods new product launch at the company’s Dry Creek factory, South Australia Premier, Jay Weatherill, says it is a “way forward in innovation” for the State.

“It’s not just a new product, but innovation in packaging… we have a bright future in South Australia,” he says.

In addition to the innovative packaging, Kevin says the new Spring Gully Foods range of cucumbers will help revive the retail gherkin market.

“We last processed Australian gherkins about 25 years ago when they were grown by commercial grape growers in the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley as a secondary crop. Since then we have been sourcing them from overseas,” he says.

Spring Gully Foods recently signed a multi-year agreement with a large commercial market gardener at Virginia and will receive about 300 tonnes of fresh cucumbers this year, with the number expected to increase each year.

According to Kevin, sourcing locally-grown cucumbers enabled Spring Gully to fill a gap within the condiments market.

“Our testing has shown the new Australian grown and processed product has a far fresher taste and we think it will generate new interest into what is a great traditional salad item,” he says.

Coles general manager grocery, Neil Lake, says Coles is passionate about innovation and supporting Australian businesses to innovate and grow.

“We are proud to work with Spring Gully Foods to grow their business and develop new products for our customers to try. Their focus on innovation has led to these new products being the only items packaged in plastic containers in the category, making it easier and more convenient than ever for Australians to enjoy some of their favourites,” Neil says.

The new products follow the launch of a range of Spring Gully fruit flavoured mustards last year. A number of other new products are in the pipeline and likely to be released in coming months.
