Lights, camera… Adelaide.

Global movie giant Technicolor is finding a new home in SA, with the announcement of a $26m visual effects centre in Adelaide, creating 500 new jobs.

Technicolor, which employs more than 15,000 people across the world with locations from L.A. to London, will establish ‘Mill Film’ in Adelaide, a 3000 sq m visual effects studio.

Due to open in the second half of 2018 in a yet-to-be announced location, the studio will include a centre of excellence and an academy, and is expected to employ 500 people, ranging from technologists to artists, in five years.

The award-winning studio’s credits include blockbusters like Wonder Woman, Bladerunner 2049, The Jungle Book, and The Shape of Water, which has been nominated for 13 Oscars.

The State Government will provide up to $6m from its Economic Investment Fund to support the project, which is expected to have an economic benefit of $252.6m over ten years.

Technicolor CEO Frederic Rose says the company wanted to expand its studio network to South Australia because “it provides an ability to engage with a pool of proven creative talent; work with leading universities; and build on a modern and mature infrastructure that is critical for working on high-end VFX projects”.

He says he believed Adelaide would “become a global VFX destination once the secret gets out”.

Adelaide is also home to visual effects company Rising Sun Pictures, which has worked on blockbusters including The Hunger Games, Gravity and Harry Potter films.

Frederic says the newly expanded Post Production Digital and Visual Effects rebate, designed to foster new business development, was “too good to ignore”.

“Investment Attraction SA has made connections for us across the whole ecosystem to ensure our success in the state,” he says.

“They made it an easy decision to come to Adelaide, and I think it will become a global VFX destination once the secret gets out.”
