Art on the menu at Ginger’s Coffee Studio

By Jen Barwick

The art hanging on the walls of Ginger’s Coffee Studio is as eclectic as the tables, chairs and vintage knick-knacks that fill the room.

Art has been a fixture of Ginger’s since the popular vintage café opened its doors in Goodwood two years ago.

One of its original owners is Megan Roodenrys, a well-known Adelaide artist who, as part of the Richmond Road Studios, set up three popular eateries as suburban art haunts – Ginger’s, The Flinders St Project in the Adelaide CBD and the Pantry on Egmont in Hawthorn.

Initially, Megan’s artwork – a variety of large and small pieces of all mediums – was the sole artwork at Ginger’s but co-owner Jim Zikos said they now share their walls with a growing number of local artists.

“The art is as important to the feel and atmosphere and success of Ginger’s as is the food and coffee,” Jim said.

“We’re selling pieces every week, but I’m pretty hopeless at guessing what gets sold in an instant and what takes a little longer… I know what I like about art but art means so many different things for people.”

Jim said Goodwood has proven a treasure trove of local art.

“We definitely have a growing portfolio of artists… we always knew there was a really strong sense of community here in Goodwood but it’s become a natural fit for Ginger’s to tap into the artistic community and offer this space for them to show their work,” he said.
