Stemmed roses, boxed chocolates and bad poetry? We have some better ways to make your lover swoon.
With our state home to fine wine, premium local produce, stunning scenery, and experiences that will take your breath away, here are a few fancy ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day and impress your significant other!
1. If you’re after … good food, good wine and good company
Henschke and Hutton Vale Farm Barossa Experience
Enjoy magnificent views of the region before landing on the Hutton Vale Farm’s private airstrip between Mount Edelstone vineyard, the Hutton farm and Hill of Grace vineyards.
From there guests are taken on a private tour of the Hill of Grace vineyard and a tasting of Henschke wines in an underground cellar.
After a short ride back to Hutton Vale Farm, owners John and Jan Angas welcome guests to their property with an intimate wine tasting of their wines and long lunch prepared and sourced from the farm and local artisan producers. The day concludes with a private air charter back to Adelaide. To book or enquire email [email protected]
2. If you’re after … pure romance
Mt Lofty House, Adelaide Hills
Mt Lofty House boutique hotel is famous for its luxurious, romantic escapes. Offering stunning panoramic views over the Piccadilly Valley and surrounded by the botanic gardens, this historical country destination is home to the fine Hardy’s Verandah Restaurant, which on February 14 will be putting on a special seven-course degustation dinner. Be quick to book as reservations will be snapped up quickly.
Guests can also relax in the more casual Arthur Waterhouse Lounge (home to Adelaide’s largest whiskey collection) or explore the wine cellar which runs the entire length of the building.
Of course, Mt Lofty House also offers beautiful high-end accommodation suites and cottages, but unfortunately Valentine’s Day reservations are fully booked, so you might have to postpone V-Day and plan another time!
3. If you’re after … food, wine and impressive views
Helicopter to the d’Arenberg Cube – McLaren Vale
What a better way to arrive at one of Australia’s most spectacularly designed cellar doors – the d’Arenberg Cube – than by private helicopter.
You can soak in the views of the coastline and McLaren Vale Wine region before landing in the d’Arry Osborn’s back garden. You’ll then be guided through three-barrel samples of single vineyard wine to create your own personalised shiraz.
What would a helicopter flight and wine blending session be without an eight-course food and wine degustation? Sit back and enjoy a food experience that showcases the best of local and seasonal produce at d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant.
4. If you’re after … peace and serenity
Mistere, Kangaroo Island
Mistere luxury eco-tourism resort at Nepean Bay on Kangaroo Island offers truly spectacular views of the ocean and surrounding farmland, particuarly from the infinity edge pool.
Accommodation includes a fully equipped chef’s kitchen, veggie patch and a chance to meet some friendly farm animals.
5. If you’re after … a bit of adventure
Hot air ballooning around the Barossa
Did you know that hot air ballooning was the first form of human aviation, dating all the way back to 1783 in Paris, the city of love?
There’s something about hot air balloons that speaks romance – the floating through the air at great heights, the impressive views and the canapés on board all add to the charm.
The Barossa Valley region offers a number of hot air balloon tours at sunrise followed by gourmet and champagne breakfasts.
6. If you’re after … a little scare
Lions at Monarto Zoo
Grab each other’s hand and head into the Lions 360 enclosure at Monarto Zoo. It’s sure to speed up your heart rate. Guests walk through a tunnel and enter a cage that brings humans within clawing range of Australia’s largest lion pride.
While the humans remain on the inside of the enclosure, the lions are free to roam around the outside and on top of the cage!
7. If you’re after … fine wine
Home of the iconic Grange red wine, Penfolds is the ultimate in fine wine. Penfolds’ Barossa Valley cellar door offers blending sessions allowing guests to enter the winemakers’ laboratory and blend their own wine from grenache, shiraz and mataro, just like the Penfolds Bin 138.
But if it’s Grange you want on your lips, then indulge in the Taste of Grange Experience featuring a selection of Penfolds’ renowned drops. Both experiences are offered daily.
8. If you’re after … a luxurious city stay
The Mayfair Hotel, Adelaide CBD
This elegant five-star boutique hotel offers a blend of heritage colonial period architecture and modern art-deco styling.
